Who Gives You Counsel? (2 Chronicles 24)

2 Chronicles 24:17 After the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king; then the king listened to them.

After the death of Athalia, Jehoida the priest help young King Joash rebuild Judah. They destroyed the idols and altars. They collected taxes to repair and rebuild the temple Joash did what was right in the Lord.  He had great guidance through Jehoiada. Unfortunately, Jehoiada died when Joash was around 47. After this, Joash turned to princes of Judah for guidance, and turned from the Lord. The Lord allowed other nations to come up against Judah, and Joash was killed.

Instead of waiting on the Lord to give him another guide or prophet, Joash tried to figure things out on his own. We know that didn’t end well for him, as it didn’t end well for any other his ancestors who tried to go on without the Lord’s guidance. We all need spiritual guidance in our lives. We need the Lord, and he comes through people in our lives. But so does the devil. So we need to be aware of who we seek guidance from, who we let into our lives, and what influence they bring. We need to think deep beginning today of who will guide us towards God and who will lead us away. We can’t wait until tomorrow or next week to start filtering who belongs in our inner circle, or we could surely be digging our hole deeper.
